Osteopathy for the Older Child

Osteopathy can be a brilliant support for older children and teenagers (around ages 5-16) – especially as their bodies change quickly, school demands increase, and sport becomes more intense. At Aligned Wellness, we take time to understand what’s going on for your child, assess how they’re moving, and create a treatment plan that’s gentle, age-appropriate, and focused on helping them feel and function better.

Common Reasons Older Children (5-11) See an Osteopath

As children grow, they can develop aches and strains from everyday life – even without a specific injury. We often see:

  • Postural aches from school and screen time (neck, shoulders, upper back)
  • “Growing pains” and general leg discomfort
  • Recurrent headaches or tension through the neck and jaw
  • Falls and knocks from play that lead to lingering pain or stiffness
  • Foot, knee or hip pain linked to growth, footwear, or activity levels
  • Tummy discomfort that may be associated with stress and tension (alongside medical guidance where needed)

The Adolescent Years (12-16): Growth Spurts, Hormones & Changing Bodies

Teenage bodies can change rapidly – and that can affect joints, muscles, coordination, and recovery. Add in exam stress, sleep changes, and hormonal shifts, and it’s common for teens to feel “out of sorts” physically.

We regularly help with:

  • Growth spurts that create tightness through the legs, hips and back
  • Joint or muscle pain that appears “out of nowhere”
  • Postural strain from studying, phones, laptops and heavy bags
  • Hypermobility (being very flexible) that can lead to aches, fatigue, or recurring niggles
  • Stress-related tension (headaches, jaw clenching, upper back tightness)
  • Period-related back or pelvic discomfort (where appropriate and with sensitivity)

Service

Active Teens & Sports Injuries

Whether your child plays football, dance, gymnastics, rugby, hockey, running, or goes to the gym, sport places big demands on a growing body. We commonly see:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Overuse injuries (pain that builds gradually over time)
  • Knee pain (often linked to growth and training load)
  • Ankle and foot issues
  • Hip and groin pain
  • Shin splints and calf tightness
  • Shoulder pain in swimmers/throwing sports
  • Back pain in dancers/gymnasts or from rapid growth + training

Osteopathy can support recovery by helping reduce pain, improve mobility, and address contributing factors like restricted movement, muscle imbalance, training load, and biomechanics — alongside advice on rest, movement, and strengthening where needed.

Lennie, has been a great practitioner for my son. He has tourettes and ADHD and we are using the service to help calm his nervous system to lower anxiety on his body and help reduce his tics. Lennie is really lovely and takes her time to get to know you. Highly recommend.

I went into my osteopath appointment today with Sandra with a complex issue of recurring migraines and visual disturbance due to medically needing to withdraw from the medication that keeps them at bay. Sandra worked her magic, after treating neck and shoulder tension she went on to do some cranial work. I am amazed at the difference it has made. My head is no longer swaying and the headaches/migraines have been relieved. Thank you so much.

Sandra is very knowledgeable, professional and also very personable. She not only listened to my complaint about a local pain in my ankle, but also checked my posture, pelvic position and gave my lower body a full MOT. Be aware, though... she has fingers stronger than Superman! Having said that, she managed to sort out niggles I've had for ages on the spot, as well as created a treatment plan for that achy ankle. I can happily recommend Sandra for your next treatment.

Absolute power house of a session, I ache in all the right places, got the right level of support for where I am... and rapidly discovered I need to have a way more consistent support/program/level of focus to get back to the level of fitness I've been missing for a while. At 47, sitting on my ar$e all day doing what I do, helping everyone else, I realised it was time to kick my health and wellbeing back into gear and this session was a perfect starter... and I'm going back for more! Thank you for a stressful, for all the right reasons. whilst entertaining evening, thank you
